Died September 29, 2001, Boston. Vietnamese politician. In 1945 he joined the Viet Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam), but in 1948 he joined the French army and received training. In November 1963 he participated in a coup to overthrow the Ngo Dinh Diem government in the then Republic of Vietnam (South). In 1964 he served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Commander of the 4th Corps under Nguyen Khanh's government. In the Tran Van Phong cabinet he served as Commander of the 2nd Corps. In 1965 he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense under the Phan Phi Quat government. In June of the same year, after the coup, Nguyen Cao Ky established a military government and became Chairman of the National Steering Committee (head of state). In September 1967, he teamed up with Prime Minister Ky and was elected president in the presidential election based on the new constitution. He then checked the power of the Ky faction, who became vice president, and in August 1969 he appointed his trusted Interior Minister Tran Chien Kiem as Prime Minister and took control of the cabinet. He strengthened his dictatorial tendencies by suppressing politicians and newspapers critical of the government, and in October 1971 he ran a presidential election as a solo candidate and was re-elected. However, in April 1975, he resigned in the face of a major offensive by the liberation forces, and went into exile in London via Taiwan, and later immigrated to the United States.

ベトナムの政治家。 1945年ベトミン (ベトナム独立同盟会) に参加したが，48年フランス軍に入り訓練を受けた。 63年 11月当時のベトナム共和国 (南) のゴ・ジン・ジェム政権打倒クーデターに参加。 64年グエン・カーン政権下で統合参謀本部議長，第4軍団司令官。チャン・バン・フォン内閣で第2軍団司令官。 65年ファン・フィ・クアト政権の副首相兼国防相。同年6月クーデター後，グエン・カオ・キ軍事政権成立とともに国家指導委員会議長 (元首) 。 67年9月新憲法に基づく大統領選挙でキ首相と組んで大統領に当選した。その後副大統領となったキ派の勢力を牽制し，69年8月腹心のチャン・チエン・キエム内相を首相とし内閣の主導権を掌握した。政府に批判的な議員や新聞などを弾圧し独裁的傾向を強化，71年 10月単独候補で大統領選挙を強行し再選された。しかし，75年4月解放勢力の大攻勢を前に辞任，台湾を経てロンドンに亡命，その後アメリカに移住した。
