A major company engaged in the development and import of marine products and food processing. Founded in 1914 as Nikko Fisheries for the purpose of fishing in Russian territory, the company was granted a monopoly on North Pacific fishing before World War II by the Russian Fisheries General Association in 1932. After the war, the company was re-established when fishing in the North Pacific resumed, and in addition to fishing, the company also produces seafood products, mainly canned salmon and trout and frozen fish, feed and livestock products, and frozen foods. The trademark "Akebono" has been in use since the Taisho era. The current company name was adopted in 1990. In recent years, the company has withdrawn from its own fishing business and is working to transform into a comprehensive food company focused on the development and import of marine products and food processing. It is the industry leader in canned salmon and crab. In 2007, Maruha and Nichiro merged to become Maruha Nichiro Holdings.

水産物の開発輸入と食品加工の大手。1914年ロシア（露）領漁業を目的に日魯漁業として設立，1932年露領漁業総合同により第２次大戦前の北洋漁業を独占。戦後北洋出漁再開で復興，漁労のほかサケ・マス缶詰や冷凍魚を中心に水産加工品，飼料畜産物，冷凍食品なども生産する。商標の〈あけぼの〉は大正時代から使用されている。1990年現社名。近年，自社漁労からは撤退し，水産品の開発輸入と食品加工事業を中心とする総合食品会社へ転換を図っている。サケ・カニ缶は業界トップ。2007年，マルハとニチロが経営統合しマルハニチロホールディングスとなる。
