Nison-in Temple

Japanese: 二尊院 - にそんいん
Nison-in Temple

A Tendai sect temple located in Nagagamicho, Saga Nison-in Temple, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. Its correct name is Ogurayama Nison Kyoin Keta-ji. It is named Nison-in Temple because it enshrines the two principal deities, Shaka and Amida. It is the 17th temple of the 25 sacred places of Enko Daishi (Honen Genku). It is said to have been founded by Ennin during the Jowa era (834-848) by the retired Emperor Saga. It is a training center for the study of the four sects of Tendai, Shingon, Ritsu, and Jodo. It later fell into decline, but Honen once lived there, and his disciple Tankū (1176-1253) worked to restore it, later receiving Honen's cremated remains and becoming the main training centre for Nembutsu. It was burned during the Onin War (1467-1477), but was rebuilt by Sanjonishi Sanetaka and his son. After the Meiji Restoration, it changed from Jodo to Tendai Buddhism. On the mountainside are the tombs of Honen's mausoleum, as well as the graves of successive generations of the Nijō, Takatsukasa and Sanjonishi families, Suminokura Ryoi and his son, Ito Jinsai, and Kyorai. The main image is a wooden statue of Shaka and Amitabha Nyorai (made in the Kamakura period), the colored silk painting of the Jitsuryu statue of Shoyo-in, the Kojo statue of Shomyō-in, the Five Pure Land Patriarchs statue, the Ten Kings statue, the Shaka Triad statue, the portrait of Honen Shonin (a portrait of the foot-pulling), the Seven Articles of Law of Honen Shonin, and the Homon Myōgi, all of which are important cultural properties of Japan. There are also three stone former tombs of the three emperors.
