?-1852 A reformist politician of the mid-Qajar dynasty in Iran. Commonly known as Amir Kabir. Born the son of a cook for the third Qajar Shah's vizier, Ka'em Maqam, he served in key positions in the province of Azerbaijan through the patronage of his master. In 1848, he became vizier when Naser al-Din Shah ascended to the throne, and implemented a policy of modernization. In order to rebuild the Qajar regime, which was in social turmoil due to the Babism religious movement, and was fragile due to its depleted finances and weak military, he protected and nurtured traditional industries, especially the textile industry, which had been hit hard by the import of European cotton products, and worked to promote new industries such as glass, sugar, and weapons manufacturing.
