Dutch chemist. Founder of stereochemistry and physical chemistry. In 1901, he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Born in Rotterdam as the son of a practicing physician, he initially received technical training at the Technical School in Delft, but aspired to study pure chemistry and entered Leiden University in 1871. There, he mainly studied mathematics in order to form the basis of his future chemistry, and studied chemistry under FA Kekule at the University of Bonn and CA Wurtz at the University of Paris, returning to Japan in 1874. After working as a lecturer at a veterinary school, he became a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam in 1877, and a professor the following year.

オランダの化学者。立体化学および物理化学の創始者。1901年第1回ノーベル化学賞受賞者となる。開業医の子としてロッテルダムに生まれる。初めデルフトの工業学校で技術教育を受けるが，純粋化学を志し，1871年ライデン大学に入学する。ここでは，将来の化学の基調とするため主として数学を学び，ボン大学でF.A.ケクレ，パリ大学でC.A.ビュルツに師事して化学を修め，74年帰国。獣医学校の講師をへて，77年アムステルダム大学講師，翌年教授となる。
