1852‐1911 Dutch chemist. Founder of stereochemistry and physical chemistry. In 1901, he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Born in Rotterdam as the son of a practicing physician, he initially received technical training at the Technical School in Delft, but aspired to study pure chemistry and entered Leiden University in 1871. There, he mainly studied mathematics in order to form the basis of his future chemistry, and studied chemistry under FA Kekule at the University of Bonn and CA Wurtz at the University of Paris, returning to Japan in 1874. After working as a lecturer at a veterinary school, he became a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam in 1877, and a professor the following year.
