A state (land) in northern Austria. It borders Upper Austria and lies downstream of the Danube River. It is one of Austria's major grain-growing regions. Its capital is Sankt Pölten (population 50,000, 1991). Its area is 19,170 km2, and its population is 1.52 million (1995). [Geography] The majority of the population is engaged in agriculture, with rye, wheat, corn, and sugar beets being the main crops produced in the area, and the Wachau Valley, with its vineyards on the slopes of both sides of the Danube, is known as a producer of fine wine.
