A state (land) in northern Austria. It borders Upper Austria and lies downstream of the Danube River. It is one of Austria's major grain-growing regions. Its capital is Sankt Pölten (population 50,000, 1991). Its area is 19,170 km2, and its population is 1.52 million (1995).
