Located in the southeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture, halfway between Osaka and Kobe, facing Osaka Bay. Established as a city in 1925. It flourished as a post town where the Saigoku and Chugoku roads crossed, and as a town in front of the shrine gates of Nishinomiya Shrine, famous for the Toka Ebisu festival. Since the Edo period, it has been famous as a sake-brewing town belonging to the Nada Gogo (Nada). After the opening of the Tokaido Main Line, Hanshin Main Line, and Hankyu Kobe, Imazu, and Koyo lines, industries such as food, chemicals, and steel moved in, and the area also became a residential area, becoming a residential and industrial satellite city of Osaka and Kobe. It is home to Kwansei Gakuin University, Kobe College, Takedao Onsen, Horaikyo Gorge, Koshien Stadium, Nishinomiya Stadium, and the starting point of the Meishin Expressway. The city suffered major damage in the Southern Hyogo Prefecture earthquake in January 1995, with 1,108 people killed and 35,852 houses destroyed or burned. 99.96 ^{km 2} . 482,640 people (2010).

兵庫県南東部，大阪と神戸の中間にあり，大阪湾に臨む市。1925年市制。西国・中国両街道の交わる宿場町，十日戎(えびす)で著名な西宮神社の鳥居前町として栄えた。江戸時代以来，灘五郷（灘）に属する酒造地として有名。東海道本線，阪神本線，阪急神戸・今津・甲陽線開通後は食料品，化学，鉄鋼などの工業が進出，住宅地化も進み，大阪，神戸の住宅・工業衛星都市となった。関西学院大学，神戸女学院大学，武田尾温泉，蓬莱峡，甲子園球場，西宮球場があり，名神高速道路の起点。1995年１月の兵庫県南部地震では死者1108人，倒壊・焼失家屋３万5852戸の大きな被害をうけた。99.96km²。48万2640人（2010）。
