A perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family (illustration) that grows in sunny mountain grasslands and roadsides. The underground stem is clumpy and woody. The stem is quadrangular and 50-100 cm tall. The leaves are opposite, ovate, 3-6 cm long, with sawtooth edges and a wedge-shaped, winged petiole at the base. They flower from September to October in sparse spikes at the top of the stem and in the upper leaf axils, producing small, bluish-purple, lip-shaped flowers. The calyx is bell-shaped with five lobes at the tip. The corolla is two-lipped and 7-9 mm long, with the upper lip standing upright and four lobes, and the lower lip is boat-shaped and protrudes forward.
