The capital of the state of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. Population 526,000 (1995). It is an administrative city with the state government, government offices and state parliament, as well as a cultural city with many educational and research institutions such as the Technical University (founded in 1879 and reorganized as a Technical University in 1968), medical and veterinary universities and an art university. It is also an industrial city with a well-developed modern industry in machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment and chemicals. It is also famous for the international industrial fair that has been held every year since 1947. Although it is an inland city, it has a waterway (the Mittelland Canal) and an international airport, making it well-connected for transportation and transportation.
