The capital of the state of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. Population 526,000 (1995). It is an administrative city with the state government, government offices and state parliament, as well as a cultural city with many educational and research institutions such as the Technical University (founded in 1879 and reorganized as a Technical University in 1968), medical and veterinary universities and an art university. It is also an industrial city with a well-developed modern industry in machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment and chemicals. It is also famous for the international industrial fair that has been held every year since 1947. Although it is an inland city, it has a waterway (the Mittelland Canal) and an international airport, making it well-connected for transportation and transportation.

ドイツ北西部，ニーダーザクセン州の州都。人口52万6000(1995)。州政府･諸官庁や州議会のある官庁都市であるとともに，工科大学(1879年創立。1968年工科総合大学となる)，医科･獣医大学，芸術大学等多数の教育･研究機関のある文教都市であり，かつまた機械，車両，電機，化学等の近代的工業の発達した工業都市でもある。1947年以来毎年催される国際工業見本市でも有名。内陸都市だが水路(ミッテルラント運河)もあり，国際空港も擁して交通･運輸の便はよい。
