A small island on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, part of Thailand. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge at its northern end. It is one of the country's leading tin-producing areas, and open-cut and seabed mining is carried out. Most of the inhabitants are Chinese and Malay who settled here for the tin mining. The island's centre is Phuket on the southeast coast. Since the 1970s, tourism has progressed, and it has become a popular beach resort.
