French chanson singer. Her real name was Marie-Louise Damien. She was born in the working-class neighborhood of Paris. She went to work to support her family, but after a hard time landing a supporting role at the Théâtre du Châtelet, she was trained by music hall actor Roberti around 1910 and made her debut as a singer at the Théâtre Goethe-Montparnasse. During World War I, she visited soldiers to entertain them, and after the war, she sang "Night Watch at the Easel" to great acclaim. She was discovered by the playwright and actor Sacha Guitry, and gradually gained fame, creating a style of theatrical expression in black velvet dresses. She was a representative of the chanteuse realist movement before World War II, and sang disappointment and despair realistically with her low voice, with her songs "Gloomy Sunday" and "Without a Thought" being big hits in Japan as well. Her other representative works include "The Seagull" and "The Madman." She came to Japan in May 1953 (Showa 28), and retired in 1981.
