Commentary on the Chronicles - Shoki Shikkai

Commentary on the Chronicles - Shoki Shikkai
One of the representative commentaries on the Nihon Shoki from the Edo period. Co-authored by Kawamura Hidene, a samurai of the Owari domain, and his two sons, Shigene and Masune. It took about 20 years to publish, starting in 1785 (Tenmei 5). It has 31 volumes and 20 books. The Nihon Shoki did not simply translate ancient traditions into Chinese, but instead used texts from Chinese classics and Buddhist scriptures, and listed many sources. Today, it is known that most of these were not direct references to the original texts, but were second-hand quotes from similar texts such as the Geimon Ruiju, but this was the first full-scale study of the sources.
