A former town in Ika District, northern Shiga Prefecture. Located on the north shore of Lake Biwa, the town is divided into two valleys, the Shiotsu Okawa River in the east and the Oura River in the west, by a mountain range that runs north-south through the center. Rice is the main agricultural product, and fishing is also practiced on the lake shore. There is a diesel engine factory. The Hokuriku Main Line and National Route 8 run along the Okawa River, and the Kosei Line runs through the south. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar site. In January 2010, it was incorporated into Nagahama City along with Torahime Town, Kohoku Town, Takatsuki Town, Kinomoto Town, and Yogo Town in Higashiasai District. Area: 80.81 km2 .
