Indian philosopher around 980. Dates of birth and death unknown. He followed in the footsteps of his teacher Bhachaspati Mishra, and was a Nyaya polemicist who fiercely criticized the theories of the Buddhist logical school of Dignaga, Dharmakirti, and Jnanasrimitra, and the Mīmānsa school of Kumārila. He also wrote works in the Vaisheshika school, and was the first to put into concrete action the tendency to fuse the two schools. He was praised by orthodox Brahman philosophers as a great man who defeated the Buddhists by actively proposing proof of the existence of a presiding deity (Īśvara).

インドの980年ごろの哲学者。生没年不詳。師バーチャスパティミシュラの跡をうけ，ディグナーガ，ダルマキールティ，ジュニャーナシュリーミトラらの仏教論理学派，クマーリラらのミーマーンサー学派の学説を激しく批判したニヤーヤ学派の論客。バイシェーシカ学派の作品も著しており，両派融合の傾向を初めて具体的な行動に移した。仏教徒の論難にたいして主宰神(イーシュバラĪśvara)の存在証明を積極的に展開したことで，正統バラモン主義の哲学者の間で，仏教徒を打ちのめした偉人として賞賛された。
