Hideo Yoshino

Japanese:
Hideo Yoshino

Poet. Born in Gunma Prefecture. Dropped out of Keio University Faculty of Economics due to lung disease. While recuperating in his hometown, he was influenced by the poems of Shiki Masaoka, Sachio Ito and other poets of "Araragi" and decided to become a poet. In 1926 (Showa 1), he married Hatsu Kuribayashi. In 1981, he moved to Kamakura for recuperation and made it his permanent residence. Later, he was moved by Shuso Dojin's (Aizu Yaichi) collection of poems "Nanking New Songs" and studied under him from 1933, becoming his lifelong teacher. He published "One Hundred More Tanka" in the inaugural issue of "Sougen" in December 1946, and his magnificent poem about sexual love at the time of his wife's death made Hideo Yoshino's name known to the world. After the war, Hideo served as a teacher at the Kamakura Academy of Literature for a while, but he lived a life of close contact with death and illness, and created a unique, mellow style of writing based on the Manyoshu style, deepening his oriental view of life. Furthermore, from the publication of "Soubaishu" and "Kansenshu" in 1947, he developed a free-spirited state of mind that looked at the ultimate essence of life. He won the Yomiuri Literature Prize for "Yoshino Hideo Poetry Collection." He also won the Art Encouragement Prize for his poetry collection "Gankoshu."
