Indigo dyeing

Japanese: 藍染 - あいぞめ

A dyeing method in which threads and cloth are dyed with indigo liquid. Indigo liquid is made by crushing fermented indigo leaves and dissolving them in alkaline water. When cloth or thread soaked in indigo liquid is pulled out, it reacts with oxygen in the air, first turning green and then dark blue. The resulting dye is highly stable and resistant to sunlight. In addition to clothing, it is also used to make dyed paper and color paintings.

藍液で糸や布を染める染色法。藍液は藍の葉を発酵させたものを粉砕し，アルカリ性の水に溶かしてつくる。藍液に浸した布や糸を引上げると，大気中の酸素と反応して，初め緑色，やがて紺色に発色する。染め上がりの安定度は高く，日光にも強い。衣服のほか，染紙をつくり，あるいは絵画の着色にも愛用される。
