Sayyid Muhammad

...A nationalistic rebellion that lasted for 21 years from 1899 in Somalia, eastern Africa. The leader, Sayyid Muḥammad (c. 1864-1920), was the leader of an Islamic group called the Salihiyya. He appealed to the people's religious sense of crisis that Islam was in danger of being annihilated by British colonialists, and launched an ethnic rebellion that transcended tribal boundaries, centered on British Somalia. In 1899, he declared war on the British governor-general, and in 1900-02, he took advantage of Britain's difficulties in the Boer War in South Africa to launch an offensive.
