1894‐1980 Polish poet and novelist. Born in Ukraine, he formed the young poets' group Scamander in Warsaw after World War I. He wrote poetry with strong aesthetic colors and an oriental feel. In prose, he produced many excellent short stories such as "The Birch Grove" (1933) and "The Girls of Bilko" (1934), and a masterpiece that tackles the themes of life and death, love and madness is "The Nun Joanna" (1943).
