A city in the eastern part of the Nara Basin in Nara Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It developed as a market town with Tamba City at its center since ancient times, but developed as a religious city after the Tenrikyo Church headquarters was established there in the 1880s. There are facilities related to Tenrikyo, such as a worship hall, lodgings, a hospital, a university, and a library. There are machinery, metal, chemical, and textile factories along National Route 24, but most are small and medium-sized enterprises. The local industry of sliding door handles accounts for 90% of the national production. In addition to rice, watermelons, mandarin oranges, persimmons, tomatoes, cucumbers, and tea are cultivated in the rural areas. There are Isonokami Shrine, Nishiyama Kofun (historic site), and Yamato Aogaki Quasi-National Park. The city is served by the Sakurai Line, Kintetsu Tenri Line, and Nishi-Meihan Expressway.
