…A symbol is a highly ambiguous concept, but in the most general sense, it is something (such as an object, animal, or image) that represents something (such as a meaning or value) that cannot be directly perceived by the eyes or ears, through some kind of similarity, such as a dove being a symbol of peace or a crown being a symbol of royalty. The origin of the Western word for “symbol” (such as the English word “symbol”) is the noun “symbolon” from the Greek verb symballein (meaning “to put together”), which meant something that was split into two halves, which the owners of each halve put together to confirm their identity, i.e. a tally.
