A district in the west of Dazaifu City, central Fukuoka Prefecture. Former village name. In 1955 it was merged with Dazaifu Town, and in 1982 it became Dazaifu City. It is located in the narrow section of Futsukaichi, where the Ishido (Mikasa) River flows, and has developed as a residential suburb of Fukuoka City. In the third year of Tenchi (664), the Mizuki Castle embankment was built to defend Dazaifu against Silla. A water gate was installed on the river, and the timber used is now preserved at Kanzeonji Temple. In addition to the Mizuki Castle ruins and Dazaifu ruins, which are designated as special historic sites, there are many historical sites, such as the Chikuzen Kokubunji ruins, and the surrounding area belongs to Dazaifu Prefectural Natural Park.
