A Russian (Soviet) poet. Born in Georgia, he joined the revolutionary movement from his childhood. He started the Russian Futurist movement at the Moscow Art School, and distinguished himself with long poems such as "A Cloud in Trousers" (1915) and "The War and the World" (1917). After he accepted the October Revolution as "my revolution," he dominated the Soviet poetic scene with his energetic activities. He praised the world revolution and socialism in his dramatic poems "150,000,000" (1920) and "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin" (1924), and showed a lyric image of the revolutionary age in his long poem "About This" (1923), and launched a scathing attack on bureaucracy in his plays "The Bedbug" (1929) and "The Bath" (1930). However, he became isolated in the Soviet society as it entered a period of stability. He committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol, partly due to an unhappy love affair. His last work was the long poem "At the Top of His Voice." He is one of the leading poets of 20th century Russian poetry.
