Ibadan - Ibadan (English spelling)

Oyo is the capital of Oyo State in western Nigeria, West Africa. Population 1,365,000 (1995). It was founded in the 19th century by refugees and warriors who fled from Ife, Egba, Ijebu, and other areas following the establishment of the Oyo Empire. It came under British rule in 1893, and a railway line was opened from Lagos in 1901. In the 1920s, a motorway from Lagos was completed, and it flourished as a cocoa center and commercial center. When it became the capital of western Nigeria in 1951, its population exceeded 400,000, and it was said to be the largest traditional city in Africa. The first university in Nigeria is located in the northern suburbs of the town, and there are also the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and the Moore Institute, making it a major center of education and research. In 1979, the expressway between Lagos and Ibadan was completed, and factories have been moving into the suburbs. The main factories are electrical appliances, bricks, tobacco, plastics, and beer factories.
