Nicomedia - Nicomedia (English)

The capital of the Kingdom of Bithynia, founded in northwest Asia Minor around 265 BC by Nicomedes I (reigned around 279 BC to 250 BC). Today, Izmit (a port city in Turkey) is a Greek-style city that incorporated Hellenistic culture, and its residents were mostly Greeks who had immigrated from the northern city of Astakos. With fertile land and a good harbor, and located at a strategic transportation point, it prospered as a commercial center. Even after it became a Roman territory, it was the center of the province, but it was often hit by earthquakes, and was also plundered by the Goths from 256 to 257 AD. However, it was rebuilt each time and decorated with magnificent buildings, and under the rule of Emperor Diocletian, it became the eastern capital of the empire, which was divided into eastern and western parts.
