A city in southern Ukraine. It was called Nikitino until 1782. Population 136,000 (2001). It is located on the north bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir, along the Zaporozhye-Krivoy Rog railway line. It is one of the largest manganese producers in the country. There are factories for steel, ferroalloys, machinery, and crane assembly, including the Southern Steel Pipe Plant, and there is also a local history museum. Manganese deposits are distributed underground in two parts, near Nikopol and near the city of Marganets to the east. The depth is about 15 to 80 meters, the manganese content is 20 to 35%, and the manganese ore layer is a few centimeters to 6 meters thick, with an average of 2.3 meters.
