A plain in central Wiltshire, southwest England, United Kingdom. Approximately 775 km2 in area. It is a chalk undulating hill that forms part of the Wessex Hills, and is bounded in the north by the Pewsey River Valley, but other boundaries are unclear. Rivers of the Avon River system have eroded the hillside, turning the wide valley bottoms into grassland and the slopes into pastureland, where sheep farming and mixed agriculture are practiced, mainly dairy farming. Much of the land is barren, and it is used as a training ground for the military. Human habitation has continued since prehistoric times, and there are many ruins, including megalithic monuments such as Stonehenge. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
