Salisbury Plain

A plain in central Wiltshire, southwest England, United Kingdom. Approximately 775 km2 in area. It is a chalk undulating hill that forms part of the Wessex Hills, and is bounded in the north by the Pewsey River Valley, but other boundaries are unclear. Rivers of the Avon River system have eroded the hillside, turning the wide valley bottoms into grassland and the slopes into pastureland, where sheep farming and mixed agriculture are practiced, mainly dairy farming. Much of the land is barren, and it is used as a training ground for the military. Human habitation has continued since prehistoric times, and there are many ruins, including megalithic monuments such as Stonehenge.

イギリス，イングランド南西部，ウィルトシャー中部にある平野。面積約775km2。ウェセックス丘陵の一部をなす白亜層の波浪状丘陵で，北はピュージー河谷で限られるが，他の境界は不明瞭。エーボン川水系の河川が丘陵面を浸食し，幅広い谷底は草地，斜面は放牧地となって，酪農を中心に牧羊，混合農業が行われる。不毛地も多く，軍隊の演習地に利用される。先史時代より人類の居住が進み，ストーンヘンジなどの巨石記念物をはじめ遺跡が多い。
