Kano River

Japanese:
Kano River

This river originates near Amagi Pass in the center of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, flows north, and empties into Suruga Bay at Ganyu-do in Numazu City. It is a first-class river. It is 46 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 852 square kilometers. It has tributaries such as the Nekko River, Funahara River, Omi River, Fukazawa River, Daiba River, and Kise River. The upper reaches of the river have beautiful valleys, and wasabi fields that use the clear water can be seen. Due to the influence of lava flows, there are Joren Falls and Banjo Falls. Downstream from Shuzenji Bridge is the North Izu Plain, also known as the Tagata Plain. It forms a deltaic alluvial plain, but is also prone to flooding, and the Kanogawa Typhoon in 1958 (Showa 33) caused unprecedented damage. For this reason, in 1965, the Kano River Floodway was constructed, stretching from Mamanoue in Izunagaoka Town (now Izunokuni City) to Kuchino in Numazu City, and artificial river construction, such as embankments and shortening of the river course, is also underway. The river course has changed dramatically, with old river channels and natural levees developing. After merging with the Kise River, it passes through a narrow section and flows through Numazu City. It is famous as a fishing spot for sweetfish. In Matsugase, Izu City, there is Karuno Shrine, which is associated with shipbuilding and is said to be the origin of the name Kano River.
