Japanese: イスラマーバード（英語表記）Islamābād

The capital of Pakistan. Population 360,000 (1983). When Pakistan gained independence in 1947, Karachi was made the provisional capital, but in 1958 it was decided to build a new capital city northeast of Rawalpindi in northwestern Punjab Province. The new capital was named Islamabad (meaning "Islamic city"), fitting for the name of the country, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The site for its construction was selected on a gently undulating plateau with a distant view of the Punjab Himalayas to the north.

パキスタンの首都。人口36万(1983)。パキスタンは1947年の独立に際しカラチを仮首都としたが，58年にパンジャーブ州北西部のラーワルピンディー市北東方に新首都を計画都市として建設することにした。新しい首都はパキスタン･イスラム共和国という国名にふさわしいイスラマーバード(〈イスラムの都市〉の意)と命名された。その建設用地は，北方にパンジャーブ･ヒマラヤ山脈を遠望し，なだらかに起伏する高原上に選定された。
