The capital of Pakistan. Population 360,000 (1983). When Pakistan gained independence in 1947, Karachi was made the provisional capital, but in 1958 it was decided to build a new capital city northeast of Rawalpindi in northwestern Punjab Province. The new capital was named Islamabad (meaning "Islamic city"), fitting for the name of the country, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The site for its construction was selected on a gently undulating plateau with a distant view of the Punjab Himalayas to the north. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
