Written by Hara Nensai (Zen). 8 volumes, 4 books. Published in 1816. A collection of brief biographies of 72 Confucian scholars from the first half of the Edo period, from Fujiwara Seika to Hara Soukei (Nensai's grandfather). Although there are some errors in the descriptions, most of the major Confucian scholars are listed. Subsequent works were compiled by later authors, including "Sousan Senzoku Sodan: Kōhen", "Sousan Senzoku Sodan: Zokuhen", "Sousan Senzoku Sodan: Kinsei Senzoku Sodan", and "Shoukan Senzoku Sodan: Zoku Kinsei Senzoku Sodan", which, taken together, constitute a comprehensive collection of biographies of Confucian scholars up to the end of the Edo period. → Confucianism
