In Sanskrit, it means "sacred writings." Each sect in ancient India had its own āgama. Buddhism also has āgama, which are translated into Chinese as āgama. In Hinduism, the āgama of the Shaivite sect is particularly famous, with 28 main āgama and over 200 sub-sects. It is not clear when the āgama of the Shiva sect was created, but it is thought to have been around the 8th century. The Shaivite sect (Shaiva Siddhanta), based on the āgama of the Shiva sect, developed especially in the Tamil region of southern India. The Kashmiri Shaivites also possessed 64 āgama of the Shiva sect. In the 9th century, Basgupta compiled the contents of the āgama and wrote the āgama of the Shiva Sutra.
