An old town in the southwest of Iishi County, central Shimane Prefecture. National Route 54 crosses Akana Pass in the south and extends to Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, making it a key transportation route between the two prefectures. There is little arable land, so beef cattle breeding is popular. There is the Kijima Dam. 島根県中部,飯石(いいし)郡南西部の旧町。国道54号線が南の赤名(あかな)峠を越えて広島県三次(みよし)市に延び,両県連絡の交通要路をなす。耕地が少なく,肉用牛の飼育が盛ん。来島(きじま)ダムがある。2005年1月飯石郡頓原町と合併し町制,飯南町となる。117.98km2。3477人(2003)。
