Kamo no Mabuchi's Treatise on Ancient Studies. Published in 1765 (Meiwa 2). 1 volume. Written as a guide to ancient studies. Believing that poetry is a reflection of a nation's character and that research into ancient times cannot be successful without understanding poetry, the work begins with an explanation of the style of poetry in the Manyoshu. He then goes on to state the need to read the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and recommends studying the imperial edicts in the Shoku Nihongi and the norito and ritsuryo codes in the Engishiki. As well as discussing his research methods, the work also contains Mabuchi's thoughts on the ancient spirit. [Hirano Hitoshi]

賀茂真淵の古学論。1765年(明和2)成立。1巻。古代研究の手引として書かれた。歌は国ぶりのあらわれであって，歌を理解しなければ，古代の研究は成功しないと考え，《万葉集》の歌風の説明からはじめる。そして《古事記》《日本書紀》を読む必要をいい，《続日本紀》の宣命や《延喜式》の祝詞や令律を学ぶことをすすめる。研究の方法を語るとともに，真淵の古代精神についての考えがのべられている。【平野仁啓】
