Mesmer
Austrian physician. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna. He opened a practice in Vienna, where he advocated animal magnetism and practiced a type of suggestion therapy (mesmerism). He was expelled from the Austrian empire in 1778, and after trying to introduce his theory in Paris, he was not accepted, and later retired to Switzerland.
