A city in the western part of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city is located in the Niimi Basin upstream of the Takahashi River. During the Kamakura period, the Toji Temple manor of Kyoto was located there, and on either side of the river were the markets of Kamiichi and Shimoichi. With the opening of the Kishin and Hakubi lines, a settlement developed in front of the station in Kamiichi. Currently, it is a key transportation hub, with the Geibi Line and Chugoku Expressway also passing through. The area downstream from the basin is a limestone region, and limestone industry is thriving, but in recent years, the electrical machinery industry has grown significantly as companies have been attracted to the area. Chiya in the north is known as the production area of Chiya beef. In March 2005, the towns of Osa, Shingo, Tetta, and Tetsunishi in Atetsu County were incorporated. 793.29 km2 . 岡山県西部の市。1954年市制。市街地は高梁(たかはし)川上流の新見盆地にあり,鎌倉時代京都の東寺の荘園があった地で,川をはさんで上市,下市の市場があった。姫新(きしん)線,伯備線が開通して上市に駅前集落が発達。現在は芸備線,中国自動車道も通じる交通の要衝。盆地から下流は石灰岩地帯で石灰石工業が盛んであるが,近年は企業誘致が進み電気機械工業の伸びが著しい。北部の千屋(ちや)は千屋牛の産地として知られる。2005年3月阿哲郡大佐町,神郷町,哲多町,哲西町を編入。793.29km2。3万3870人(2010)。
