A town in Higashimuro County on a small peninsula overlooking the Kumano Sea in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture. Taiji Port, the town's center, is known as the birthplace of whaling in Japan, and developed after the invention of the Net Fishing Law in 1677. After coastal whaling declined, the town was also home to many whaling expeditions to the Southern Ocean, but now the town is home to spiny lobster releases, yellowtail fixed net fishing, and bonito pole-and-line fishing. In 2009, a film about dolphin drive fishing was released, attracting attention both at home and abroad. The coast is included in Yoshino-Kumano National Park. The Kisei Main Line runs through the town. 5.81 km2 . 3,250 people (2010). →Related topic: Whaling Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
