Japanese: 車軸藻類 - しゃじくもるい（英語表記）stoneworts

A freshwater algae with a shape similar to that of the fern horsetail, it is classified as an independent group due to its characteristics of having a main axis composed of nodes and internodes, having whorls of twigs growing from the main axis, and having sexual reproductive organs with a complex multicellular structure. It is also called ring algae. Its name comes from the shape of the whorls of twigs. It belongs to the green plants phylogenetically because it contains chlorophyll a and b , produces starch through photosynthesis, and has sperm with two whip-shaped flagella of equal length.

シダ植物のスギナに似た形状の淡水産の藻類で，主軸が節部と節間部から構成されること，主軸から小枝を輪生すること，および多細胞性の複雑な形態の有性生殖器官をもつことなどの特徴から，分類上独立した一群として扱われる。輪藻植物ともいう。名前は輪生する小枝の様子に由来する。クロロフィルaとbをもち，光合成によりデンプンをつくること，精子が等長の2本のむち形鞭毛をもつことなどから，系統的には緑色植物に所属する。
