Gushikawa [village] - Gushikawa

Japanese: 具志川[村] - ぐしかわ

A village in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. It occupies the western part of Kumejima, about 100 km west of Naha City on Okinawa Island (the main island). Its population was 4,662 (1995). There is a mountain range about 300 m high on the border with Nakazato Village to the east, a plateau has developed to the south, and a gently sloping low plain stretches to the west. It has long been known as a rice producing area, and has been blessed with water from rivers, but efforts have been made to irrigate the water-scarce hilly areas by building reservoirs, and the rice paddy areas have expanded. However, after World War II, many areas were converted into sugar cane fields.

沖縄県島尻（しまじり）郡の村。沖縄島(本島)の那覇市の西約100kmにある久米島の西部を占める。人口4662(1995)。東側の仲里村と境界を接するところに約300mの山塊があり，南側には台地が発達し，西側には緩傾斜の低平地が広がっている。古くから米の生産地として知られ，河川水利にも恵まれていたが，水の乏しい丘陵地には溜池を作るなど灌漑にも努力し，水田地域を広げてきた。しかし第2次世界大戦後はサトウキビ畑に変わったところが多い。
