A village in Kitaazumi County in northwest Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,320 (1995). Located east of Omachi City and east of the three Nishina Lakes, the area is hilly and most of the village area is mountain forest and plain. Until recently, it was known as a hemp production area, and once it was mainly used for charcoal production and sericulture, but from around 1960, the number of families leaving the village increased, and it became the most depopulated village in the prefecture. In the 1970s, road construction and other works made it possible for people to commute to neighboring cities and towns. Rice is the main agricultural product, but tobacco and highland vegetable cultivation is also on the rise. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
