A tree of the Acanthaceae family native to eastern Australia (illustration). It can reach a height of 10 m and is glabrous except for the inflorescence. The leaves are pinnately compound, large, 30-60 cm long, with 13-31 serrated pinnae, arranged opposite each other, and somewhat thick and leathery. The inflorescence is terminal in the leaf axil or at the end of a branch, or sometimes on the trunk, cone-shaped, 30-50 cm long, and drooping. The flowers are bisexual, white or pale pink, about 3 cm in size, with 5 petals and 5-10 stamens, and the ovary is three-lobed, each with two ovules.
