…[Kenichi Kobayashi] In Japan, a portable shield is called a hand shield or a hand shield, and is made of leather or wood, sometimes wrapped in leather, but is generally small and used mainly by infantry in battles with uchimono (pointing weapons) or nagae (long-handled weapons). Kaidate (pointing shields) are used to defend against horseback archery, and are lined up in front of the battlefield, and are also lined up around towers and the edges of ships. These are large and wrapped in iron or iron-like leather, but most are made of hard, thick wooden boards, and from around the Kamakura period, the owner's name was attached to the surface, similar to a flag. A kaidate is a rectangular board with a horizontal bar near the top of the back and a support pole attached, and a board with a hanging hook and a pot on the end, which is hung like a wooden fence, is called a tatami shield. …
