Reverse interest - Gyakuhibu

Japanese:
Reverse interest - Gyakuhibu

This refers to the daily interest rate charged in margin trading and lending of stocks. In margin trading and lending, a securities finance company lends the necessary cash to the buyer or seller using the stocks as collateral, or lends stocks using cash (margin deposit). Usually, the person borrowing the purchase money (buyer) has a larger amount than the person borrowing the stocks to sell (seller), so the seller, as the lender of funds, receives the daily interest paid by the buyer. This is called forward daily interest. However, when the number of short sold shares by borrowing stocks exceeds the number of short bought shares by loan, a stock shortage occurs, so the securities finance company must raise the necessary number of shares, and the seller is charged a daily interest rate for the short borrowed shares. This is called reverse daily interest. The reverse daily interest is set at a certain yen and sen per share. The rates of stock lending and lending fees for customers are decided by competition between member securities companies and announced by the exchange.
