Born: April 2, 1905, Kyiv [Died] December 15, 1986, Lausanne. A Russian-born French dancer and choreographer. In 1923, he joined S. Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, dancing in G. Balanchine's "The Prodigal Son" and presenting his first choreography, "The Fox" (1929). In 1929, he joined the Paris Opera and became its artistic director, reviving the struggling ballet company and marking an era (→Paris Opera Ballet). During that time, he created "Icart" (35), "Alexander the Great" (37), "Suite in White" (43), "Phèdre" (50), "Romeo and Juliet" (55), "The Firebird" (54), and "Daphnis and Chloe" (58). His style, which respected tradition, is called neoclassical. After dancing Giselle in 1956, she retired as a dancer, but continued to be invited to choreograph in various countries around the world. Her major works include Le Manifeste du chorégraphe (35), Diaghilev (39), Histoire du Ballet Russe (39), Vestris (50), and Réflexions sur la danse (52).
