The act of harmonizing two opposing claims, opinions, precedents, legal principles, etc. to arrive at a new conclusion. In ancient and medieval Japan, this was called orinaka or orinaka no ho, and was one of the distinctive logics used in the fields of law, politics, and ceremonies. In particular, in the court society from the Heian to Kamakura periods, when the gap between the real world and the Ritsuryo Code and precedents for various ceremonies grew, and when the law and precedents could not be denied in principle, it was often necessary to find some kind of harmony between the two.
