An old city on the eastern edge of Ehime Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. In the early modern period, it was the castle town of the Ichiyanagi clan, and later became a shogunate territory, with a magistrate's office established there. The city center faces the Hiuchi Nada Sea and has long been known as a producer of Iyo paper. The paper manufacturing industry is thriving, with many paper and paper processing factories concentrated in the area. It is a transportation hub with the Yosan Line, Takamatsu Expressway, Matsuyama Expressway, Kochi Expressway, and National Route 11 passing through it. The traditional craft of mizuhiki zaiku is famous, and mandarin oranges are also produced here. In April 2004, it merged with Iyomishima City, Uma District's Shingu Village, and Doi Town to form Shikoku Chuo City. 69.37 km2 . Population: 38,436 (2003). 愛媛県東端の旧市。1954年市制。近世初期一柳氏の城下,のち天領となり,代官所が置かれた。中心市街は燧灘(ひうちなだ)に臨み,古くから伊予紙産地として知られ,製紙工業が盛んで,多くの製紙・紙加工工場が集中する。予讃線,高松自動車道,松山自動車道,高知自動車道,国道11号線が通じる交通要地である。伝統工芸品の水引細工は有名。ミカンも産する。2004年4月伊予三島市,宇摩郡新宮村,土居町と合併し,四国中央市となる。69.37km2。3万8436人(2003)。
