...On the other hand, in parallel with this, conflicts arose within the Alawites over their involvement in the June War of 1967 and the Jordanian Civil War in 1970. This conflict ultimately culminated in a confrontation between party radicals and the military, and in 1970 the military led by Defense Minister Assad (1928-) emerged victorious, leading to the birth of the Assad regime. Assad has endeavored to organize in order to build a broad political base, and has revised his radical socialist orientation to adopt a more realistic course.
