Satsuma Domain Historical Records - Satsuma Domain Historical Records

This is a chronological collection of historical materials related to the Shimazu family that are in the domain of the Kagoshima (Satsuma) domain. It contains documents and records from 1041 (Chokyu 2) to 1895 (Meiji 28) based on the Shimazu family documents. The basics were compiled by Ijichi Sueyasu, the Kagoshima domain's record magistrate, and his son Suemichi assisted, adding to the material up to around 1897. The original that Suemichi submitted to the Shimazu family is the Shimazu family version, which is included in the National Treasure Shimazu Family Documents and is currently in the possession of the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. The original book is called "Kyuuki Zatsuroku" (Kyuuki Miscellaneous Records) and is a massive 362 volumes in total, consisting of 48 volumes in the first part (containing the years from Chokyu 2 to Tenbun 23), 102 volumes in the second part (containing the years from Koji 1 to Shoho 1), 182 volumes in the follow-up (containing the years from Shoho 2 to Meiji 28), and 30 volumes in the appendix (containing years of unknown origin). The editors have selected historical materials from a long period of time with great discernment. It is the fundamental collection of historical materials for Kagoshima history, and is unique among regional historical materials nationwide in that it was started to be compiled during the feudal period. The entire collection has been published as "Kagoshima Prefecture Historical Materials." Manuscripts are available at the Cabinet Library and the Kagoshima Prefectural Library.
