Southern Cowherd Song

Japanese: 南部牛追唄 - なんぶうしおいうた

A labor song from the Shimohei and Waga districts of Iwate Prefecture. Strictly speaking, there is a distinction between "Ushiho-bushi," which is a road song about carrying luggage on the back of a cow, and "Ushioi-uta," which is a purely grazing song, but recently the two have been mixed together and simply called "Ushioi-uta." The most commonly sung song is "Sawauchi Ushioi-uta" ("We may be in the countryside, but the southern country is yo, both east and west are saahae, the golden mountains are korasansae, ha-rayopa-apa-pa-pa-pa") from the Kazuno Highway and Senboku Highway that cross the Ou Mountains.

岩手県下閉伊（しもへい）･和賀（わが）郡地方の労作歌。厳密にいえば，荷物を牛の背に載せて運搬する道中歌である〈牛方節〉，純然たる放牧歌である〈牛追唄〉のような区別があるが，最近は両者を混用して単に〈牛追唄〉と呼ぶ。一般には奥羽山脈を横断する鹿角（かづの）街道および仙北街道の《沢内（さわうち）牛追唄》(田舎なれどもサアーハエー南部の国はヨー　西も東もサアーハエー金（かね）の山コーラサンサエー　ハーラヨーパアパアパッパー)がよく歌われている。
