Committee on the Peaceful Uses of the Sea-bed and the Ocean Floor

A committee to consider issues related to the peaceful uses of the seabed beyond the scope of national jurisdiction. It was established as a permanent committee consisting of 42 countries, including Japan, at the United Nations General Assembly in 1968. In 1970, it led to the Declaration of Principles on the Seabed Beyond National Jurisdiction (General Assembly Resolution). With this resolution, the Seabed Committee became the Preparatory Committee for the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (91 countries), and was dissolved in December 1973 when the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea was held.

国家の管轄権の範囲をこえる海底の平和利用に関する諸問題を検討する委員会。 1968年の国連総会において日本を含む 42ヵ国で構成する常設委員会として設置された。 70年に，国家の管轄権の範囲をこえる海底に関する原則の宣言 (総会決議) を導いている。この決議により，海底委員会は第3次国連海洋法会議の準備委員会 (91ヵ国) となり，73年 12月，第3次海洋法会議開催とともに解散した。
