A general term for the genus Miltonia in the family Orchidaceae. It is an evergreen herb that consists of about 20 species and grows in Central and South America. It is generally sold in pots. The species that grow in high altitudes in Colombia and Ecuador are particularly beautiful with large flowers, and are called pansy orchids because of their flat-opening flowers. Linear or linear tongue-shaped leaves grow from the terminal ends of flat pseudobulbs. Flower stalks grow from the base of the pseudobulb, and one to several flowers grow on each stalk. The sepals and lateral petals of the flower are almost the same shape and size. They have a large flat lip. There is a small projection at the base of the lip, and the surrounding area is decorated with a characteristic pattern. This part is commonly called the "mask." In addition to highland varieties that were bred using Miltonia vexillaria as a breeding parent, lowland varieties are also cultivated. It prefers a cool climate in summer and can tolerate a minimum winter temperature of 12 to 15°C.
