Nanbu clan

Japanese: 南部氏 - なんぶうじ
Nanbu clan

A group of warriors established in the early days of the Kamakura Shogunate. Their ancestor was Mitsuyuki, the third son of Kagami Tomitsu of the Seiwa Genji clan, and their family name was from Nanbu-go, Kai Province (Nanbu-cho, Yamanashi Prefecture). As eastern vassals, they acquired territories in various provinces, including Mutsu and Tajima, and at the end of the Kamakura period, they also became vassals of the Hojo clan. Moroyuki was selected by the Mutsu provincial government under the Kenmu administration as the magistrate of northern Oshu, and established the foundation of the Oshu Nanbu clan in Hachinohe-nejo, Nukanobu County (Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture). During the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, the Sannohe Nanbu clan took the lead and expanded its influence throughout northern Ouu, competing fiercely with the Akita, Asari, and Onodera clans. During Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Oshu Punishment, Nobunao was granted the fief of seven counties, including Nukabe, Iwate, Kazuno, Shiba, Hei, Hienuki, and Waga, and he put down the rebellion of Kunohe Masazane. He then joined the Tokugawa clan and became the founder of the Morioka Domain.
